CASES FOR CFD STUDIES


1. The participants are free to use their own grids generated as per the gridding guidelines.
2. Grids from the organizers, both structured and unstructured, will be made available on the SPICES web page.
3. In line with the AIAA DPW, the CFD studies include both compulsory and optional cases; the participant's data will be included for comparisons during the symposium, only when all the compulsory cases are included.
4. All the compulsory studies pertain to CSIR-NAL surface definition. Once the surface definition from IIT-Kanpur becomes available it would be posted on the SPICES web page and the studies pertaining to this surface definition are included in the optional case.


A. Compulsory studies

1. Grid convergence study

Configuration : NAL pressure model.
Flow :  Fully turbulent, as per NAL conditions.
Alpha : 6 and 18 degrees.
Beta : 0 degrees.
Grids : Tiny, coarse, medium, fine and extra-fine, generated as per the gridding  guidelines.
Data : Forces/moments, surface pressure data and surface flow visualization as per  the requirements to be posted later.


2. Drag polar

Configuration :  NAL pressure model.
Flow : Fully turbulent, as per NAL conditions.

Alpha :  -4, 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 (13 incidences).
Beta : 0 degrees.
Grids : Medium.
Data : Forces/moments.

3. Drag polar

Configuration :  NAL pressure model with sting.
Flow : Fully turbulent, as per NAL conditions.

Alpha :  0, 6, 18, 22, 24 (5 incidences).
Beta : 0 degrees.
Grids : Medium.
Data : Forces/moments.


B. Optional studies

1. Drag polar

Configuration : IIT-Kanpur model.
Flow :  Fully turbulent, as per IIT-Kanpur conditions.
Alpha : -4, 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 (13 incidences).
Beta : 0 degrees.
Grids : Medium.
Data : Forces/moments

2. Side slip studies


Configuration : NAL pressure model.
Flow : Fully turbulent, as per NAL conditions.
Alpha : 6, 20 and 22 degrees.
Beta : 10 degrees.
Grids : Medium.
Data : Forces/moments.

3. Wall effect studies

Configuration : NAL tunnel wall model.
Flow :  Fully turbulent, as per NAL conditions.
Alpha : 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 degrees.
Beta : 0 deg.
Grids : Medium.

4. Elevon deflection studies

Configuration : NAL Force model - 1.
Flow : Fully turbulent, as per NAL conditions.
Alpha : 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 degrees (7 incidences).

5. Spoiler deflection studies

Configuration : NAL Force model - 2.
